How to use Addition and Subtraction Fact Families
Use the part steppers, or New Family, to choose a part-part-whole fact family.
The first blank starts highlighted. Tap the correct number tile to fill it, then continue through all four equation frames.
Click a filled blank and choose a different tile to replace it, or use Undo to go back one step.
Build two addition facts and two subtraction facts from the same three numbers.
Use the representation dropdown at the top to choose a part-whole model, bar model, counters, ten frames, number line or no representation.
Press Check to see which frames are correct. Use Show Answer only after pupils have had thinking time.
Print Worksheet prints a blank four-fact template on one side of landscape A4. Record the two parts and whole, complete the two addition and two subtraction facts, then draw a representation for each. The header Print button still prints the current filled display.
The point is to show that one part-part-whole relationship unlocks both addition facts and the related subtraction facts. For example, if 6 + 7 = 13, then 7 + 6 = 13, 13 − 6 = 7 and 13 − 7 = 6.
